If the answer is no, maybe you should turn off WiFi for now so that we can concentrate on making sure your laptop connects better after next time. This is the story of how I made my laptop connect better. It’s not very interesting - it’s just about my adventures in finding out what was causing my problem and then solving it. I have a laptop that has Intel Centrino technology, that is to say that it uses an Intel chip for its wireless internet connection. I have had my laptop for several years now, but only recently did I begin to experience problems with connecting to the internet via wifi. In particular, I would connect to a wifi router at home and be unable to get online. I would then connect on a wired connection and be able to get online. After several days of this, I determined that the problem was not likely the router itself, because my older laptop connected fine with it. Now if you’ve had a computer for some time, you may have noticed that some components fail over time. One of the most common parts to fail is the video card because graphics use so much processing power. My laptop had been connected fine with my old video card but not with my new video card. In order to get online again, I purchased a new wireless network adapter for my laptop. My new adapter works fine, but my laptop is still not able to connect to the internet via wifi. This is when I went exploring in the Intel Centrino Technology Specification, which I had downloaded at some point. Within this document is a subsection called “WLAN Troubleshooting”. It turns out that there are various steps you can go through in order to troubleshoot your wireless internet connection. At the very least, one of these steps is almost always required for wireless internet troubleshooting, and that is to turn off your encryption, which allows wireless devices to connect with other devices without any passwords or usernames or anything like that. I followed the steps in the troubleshooting section. My wireless connection was fine except for the encryption. In order to get my laptop to connect with wi-fi, I had to turn off encryption. In order to repair my wireless connection, I have since entered a passphrase so that I don’t have to turn off encryption all of the time when my laptop is connected with a nearby wifi router.
